At the provocation of two radio talk show hosts and the owner of the Illusions Go- Go Bar in Florence, a group of New Jersey strippers have organized to protest the fact that the states new smoking ban will exempt only gambling casinos, and not bars and strip clubs. They plan to stage a demonstration on the steps of the State House in Trenton in a few days time.
Acting Governor Richard Codey has said that he plans to sign the gambling casinos - exempted smoking ban immediately, which means that the strippers protest will take place after the bill has taken effect. Radio commentators Craig Carton and Ray Rossi, however, say that it will be possible to have the bill repealed as soon as Gov.-Elect Jon Corzine takes office.
Carton said that it is hypocritical to ban something that is legal: “[B]ar owners know their clientele enjoys smoking. But now theyre not going to be able to let people do something thats legal in their business.
The owner of Illusions, Eleanore Travia, said that it was unfair that the gambling casinos were allowed an exemption to the law, while businesses like hers were not.
“This is ridiculous! For you to enjoy a cocktail and a cigarette together in a public place, youll have to go to Atlantic City and put a quarter in a slot machine, Travia griped.
She added that the gambling casinos had “paid big money to be eliminated from that bill. They paid off, to get casinos off of that bill.”
