Political commentators have recently reported that certain US legislators are trying to take another stab at web casino gambling.
Back in November, House of Representatives member Jim Leach, who is a Republican from Iowa, introduced the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2005.”
The anti- web casino gambling bill, called H.R. 4411, is expected to be debated by Congress within the next few months, in the final session of the 109th Congress. The bill would prohibit the use of credit cards, or any other payment method associated with American banking institutions, from being used in web casino gambling.
Rick Smith, the executive director of the Interactive Gaming Council, called the effort by Rep. Leach ‘futile,’ pointing out that much of what it sets out to do is actually already in play. Of their own initiative, for example, many credit card companies do not accept payments from web casino sites. The more than 12.5 million Americans who are regular visitors to web casino sites have clearly, said Smith, found another way to deposit funds.
H.R. 4411 gives the appearance of coming down harshly on web casino gambling. However, critics say that it is laden with concessions to special interest groups. For example, the bill allows telephone and web casino horse race betting, as well as online betting on fantasy sports leagues and tribal gaming.
